Battling Addiction? Vital Step can help

I saw a video recently on Facebook. The guy was talking about addiction and that how a lot of what is practiced now in treating it is based on an experiment from the early 1900’s.

In the experiment, they put a rat in a cage and gave it two sources of water. In one was just plain water. The other was drug-laced. Inevitably the rat became addicted and eventually overdosed, killing itself.

Much, much later a scientist came along and noticed something very off about this experiment. As an alternative, he set up a rat haven. A rat park if you will. Little bridges, tunnels, spinning wheels and most importantly, other rats. The same water options were given to these rats. Funnily enough, none of the rats partook of the drug-laced water.

So in conclusion, if a person feels included and loved, has purpose and responsibility the likely hood of them being an addict is quite small.

In my own experience, this article rang so true. Prior to my current situation, I enjoyed the occasional drink or three. I can’t say I was a big drinker but I was probably drinking more than was healthy for me. I have been sober since Jan 2019 and am not missing alcohol at all. Being present for my young boy has been my main motivator but the other benefits keep adding up as well. Waking in the morning ready to go. Clarity of thought and mind. Owning my emotions. I’m hardly ever ill and feel fit and healthy.

If you know someone who is an addict give them a hug. Include them in your life. Let them know you are there for them. If you are battling addiction yourself and are feeling distant from family and friends then try and join a group or club where you can be embraced and included.

At Vital Step we offer strong tools to help battle things like addiction. Our exercise is fun and interesting. Done consistently it also has a multitude of side benefits. Fitness, confidence, memory gain and inclusiveness.
